Jojo’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit at ChildServe

Johnston, IA

This project at ChildServe included the renovation of 14,853 SF of existing office space into support and care programs for children in the facility. The project also includes a new connector area between the two buildings of 3,531 SF.

This new rehabilitation unit is the only freestanding, comprehensive pediatric inpatient rehabilitation program for children and young adults in the state of Iowa. The 14-bed unit features a six-bed nursery and eight private rooms. Inside the unit, you can also find the Peggy Fisher and Larry Stelter Rehabilitation Gym filled with specialized equipment for patients. An interactive sensory wall offers motor skill and sensory exploration for children of all ages and abilities.

The 8 private rooms are each divided into child, and family zones to maximize space and efficiency. Large private bathrooms feature walk-in showers and plenty of space for children with mobility concerns to receive assistance. Some unique features of these rooms include PPE storage built into the room’s entrance and uniquely fabricated doors for ease of movement. Sleeper sofas and recliners provide an overnight option for family members who want to stay with their children.

The Prairie Meadows Nursery caters to babies who have recently graduated from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) but still need extra care. Each of the nursery’s six private rooms is equipped with a state-of-the-art monitoring system, as well as oxygen, med gas and suction capabilities.

Nurses’ stations are placed in the center of the unit where the nurse-to-child ratio is 1:3. This project also includes a teen activity area where older youth can spend time with other children of a similar age.

Lastly, this unit offers a family room which provides families with an additional area to spend time together during their child’s stay. Family education and training sessions also take place within the family room.
